About Melissa
My passion for healthcare innovation comes from challenges my family has faced navigating a complicated system that too often fails to put patients and families at the center of care. In my previous role at OpenNotes, I catalyzed a disruptive healthcare movement in the US grounded in leveraging technology and the power of patients.
I’m all about perspective. I work hard to empathize and understand the diverse experiences of clients, users, patients, and clinicians.
Fun fact: I’ve been in a photo-shoot with a zebra
My superpower: Diving in deep and exploring new ideas.
My other superpower: Eating a ridiculously expensive amount of oysters.

National Program Director, OpenNotes 2013-2016
OpenNotes is a movement for greater transparency, engagement, and empowerment in healthcare. I spearheaded our team’s dissemination efforts to reach more than 8 million patients at over 80 healthcare systems across the US.
Program Administrator, OpenNotes 2012-2013
I managed research operations for the OpenNotes team, including grant proposals and multiple study projects on patient engagement, patient safety, and patient and doctors’ experiences with patients portals.
International Health Researcher, University of Otago 2009-2011
As a healthcare researcher, I evaluated how healthcare is delivered, from what makes healthcare affordable in New Zealand, to designing and conducting a research study about what prevents patients and their families from accessing resources and care at a TB clinic in Java, Indonesia, to creating an assessment tool to understand the unique needs of refugee children in Thailand.
Volunteer Coordinator, Obama for America 2008
I worked with a volunteer campaign team in Harrisburg, PA managing front desk and out-of-state volunteers. Our dedicated team and community achieved 116% of the targeted vote goal.

Supported projects and operations for a new environmental education NGO in India. Constructed the organization’s first annual reports for 2006, 2007, and the initial part of 2008.
